THE CITY

Brussels is a cosmopolitan city, with a liveliness and an appeal that are intimately related to its role as a crossroads for all of Europe. Architectural styles range from Gothic cathedrals and churches to the gracious classical facades of the Palais des Nations, the Royal Palace and to the many art nouveau and art deco houses in the comfortable neighborhoods where the Bruxellois live.

Brussels and the place to start getting to know the city is the Grand'Place. This historic square, lined with exuberantly ornate guild houses and focused on the Gothic heights of the Hotel de Ville, is widely held to be one of Europe's finest.

The Grand'Place is also, as it has been for centuries, the focal point of the city's social and civic life. The people of Brussels gather here for their most important ceremonies and festivals, for the traditional bird market on Sunday mornings, and - perhaps most importantly - for no task more pressing than to sit, have a beer, and let the world pass.

THE SCHOOL

Founded in 1984 by the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), the Language Centre in Louvain-la-Neuve ( CLL - Centre de Langues à Louvain-la-Neuve) is a non-profit-making organization specialized in teaching the use of modern languages. At present, CLL has three centres: Brussels, Louvain-la-Neuve and Namur. CLL French courses are offered at the Brussels and Louvain-la-Neuve Centres. They are organized on weekday mornings, afternoons and evenings and on Saturday mornings. There are also special programmes for the holiday periods.

A specialized teaching team CLL teachers teach their mother tongue; they are familiar with and have mastered its subtleties. This means that not only do they have a perfect knowledge of the language but are also dedicated to it. Our French teachers, who are University graduates, follow a continuous training programme. There is close cooperation between CLL and the " Centre for the teaching of Romance languages and literature" at the Université catholique de Louvain
